Sales Enablement
Also called: revenue enablement, sales productivity, GTM enablement
Sales enablement is one of those terms that expanded to cover almost everything and consequently means slightly different things at different companies. The stable core is straightforward: it is the function responsible for making sure reps have what they need to sell effectively.
Sales enablement is the function that equips a sales team with the content, tools, training and process required to sell effectively. It is the programme; sales readiness is one of the outcomes the programme is trying to produce, and practice is one of the mechanisms it uses.
What sits inside it
The scope varies but consistently includes:
- Onboarding and ramp programmes for new hires.
- Sales content — decks, one-pagers, case studies, competitive material.
- Tooling: CRM configuration, sequencing, conversation intelligence, practice platforms.
- Ongoing training and skill development for tenured reps.
- Process and methodology — the qualification framework, the stage definitions, the playbook.
- Measurement: ramp time, readiness, content usage, win-rate movement.
Where the function usually breaks
The recurring failure is a heavy tilt toward content and a light touch on practice. Enablement teams are often measured on assets produced and courses delivered, both of which are countable, rather than on whether reps can hold a conversation, which historically was not. The result is well-equipped reps who have never rehearsed the moments that decide their deals.
The second failure is the reverse of the first at scale: excellent programmes that get rationed because the practice component consumes trainer hours per rep. That is the constraint AI practice specifically addresses.
Enablement versus readiness versus coaching
These three get used interchangeably and are usefully distinct. Enablement is the function. Sales readiness is a measured outcome — whether a specific rep can hold live conversations right now. Sales coaching is one of the activities inside enablement, focused on individual skill development through feedback. A team can have strong enablement content, weak coaching, and no readiness measurement at all, which is a common and diagnosable position.
